Regulations on fuel sulphur content and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are ever more becoming stricter for the marine industry. Also has the IMO, in April 2018, set targets to cut the shipping sector's overall CO2 output by 50 percent by 2050.


While LNG has received the most attention in the past few years to comply with international regulations, other alternative fuels are coming into play in the years to come, including methanol, hydrogen, etc. In contrast to LNG, such alternatives might still have some hurdles to take with regard to technology readiness level, availability in ports and economical viability.


In order to prepare ports to a multi fuel future, the LNG working group of IAPH will soon broaden its scope and transform into a Clean Marine Fuels working group. Mitigating measures such as Exhaust Gas Scrubbers, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) will be beyond the scope of this working group.


85-100% less pollutants

LNG as a shipping fuel can help significantly reduce the environmental impacts of maritime transport, most likely without increasing costs. With this fuel, NOx, SOx and particulate emissions can be reduced by 85-100% in comparison with HFO.
