Container ships

Although ferries dominate the current LNG-fuelled fleet, the order books also include container ships. The contracts have been signed and the vessels are due to be delivered in 2015 through 2018. It was recently announced that the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has ordered five large container ships (18,000 TEU) that will be class-approved and designed as “LNG-ready” to enable easy retrofit in the future.


Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE)

At the end of 2012 TOTE announced it had commissioned two new container ships to be equipped with dual-fuel engines and constructed at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, Calif. Construction work started in February 2014 and the vessels are due for delivery in 2015 and 2016. They will operate between Jacksonville (US) and San Juan (Puerto Rico), replacing eight smaller container vessels. They will be the first container vessels fuelled by LNG.

Horizon Lines

Horizon Lines, a US ship owner operating 15 container ships, is to retrofit six of these vessels with LNG engines. At the end of 2013 the company received permission to send all its ships to a non-US shipyard for retrofitting. It is not yet clear which shipyard has been granted the conversion work.

In November 2013 Matson, a US carrier operating in the Pacific, announced a contract with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. to build two container ships equipped with dual-fuel engines. These vessels will also incorporate other environmentally-friendly technologies, including a fuel-efficient hull design.

The number of LNG-fuelled ships has greatly increased over the past few years. While the first LNG-fuelled ships operated mainly in Norwegian waters, LNG-fuelled ships for operation in European, North American and even Australian waters are now on order or have already been delivered.
